Colin Alexander is an award-winning sound designer, editor, and mixer based in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been heard in theaters, film festivals, television sets, and streaming platforms around the world.
In addition to two decades of film/TV post production experience Colin has worked in a variety of sound-related fields, including extensively as a production sound mixer, boom operator, and studio engineer (music, podcasts, public radio), with detours into music composition, live theater, and installation art.
From a young age Colin was entranced by the creative possibilities of sound; falling asleep nearly every night listening to old time radio dramas, books on tape, or classic comedy records by the likes of Monty Python or the Firesign Theatre. Later he also became an obsessive music fan & record collector. He idolized people like Brian Eno, Kate Bush, Madlib, or the Dust Brothers — genre-blending music producers who used the studio itself as an instrument. The way these artists were able to convey such rich emotions and stories through elaborate collages of manipulated sound is a continued inspiration to this day.
Colin went on to major in sound design, primarily focused on film/TV post production along with music production and sound art. Although post sound has always been his primary interest, the intersection of these three fields is fundamental to his work.
The best sound design is as tightly composed as any piece of music, as deeply meaningful as any avant garde art piece. It is the subconscious glue holding everything else together. In the words of Dr. Anne Fernald, “sound is touch at a distance.” Even if the audience is barely aware of it, they can always feel its presence.
